So, why take this ride? Why Colorado Springs? What were the goals?
A friend from church had just graduated from the AF Academy and met a nice lady, and was getting married. It would be a nice trip, although it could get pretty cool. I have had a chance to see some of the mountains in Colorado and wanted to see more. We would be on motorcycles, what would be better than that? “Why ask why?”
I used a little vacation and took Friday off, telling my boss that if all went well, I would be back Monday. There were 1600 miles of road programmed into my GPS and which would make for a nice three day weekend.
Getting ready was a bit of a challenge, the rear tire wasn’t going to live through the trip. The holder for the GPS was broken, and the helmet needed a new shield and some vent covers. Per my normal routine, I didn’t get it all done by the time I got off work at 3:30 on Thursday. Field came over to my place and helped put the final touches on everything, and we were on the road at 4:30 pm. Our first stop was my uncle’s house in Billings. After 229 miles of I-94, and a quick stop for gas in Forsyth we were in Billings a little after the last bit of sunlight faded. Winters coming and the sun was gone at 7:30 pm.
